Experiencing “moodiness” or “irritability” every now and then is absolutely normal. It can occur when you’re feeling stressed, hungry, tired or can happen due to lot of external and internal factors. Mood swings can sometimes have a major impact on the quality of life, mental health, and overall well-being, but identifying their root cause can empower you to make healthy lifestyle changes.
WHAT ARE MOOD SWINGS?
A mood swing is an unexpected or extreme shift in the emotional state of a person. During a mood swing, a person might immediately switch from feeling happy to feeling sad, irritated, or angry. Mood swings are a fairly normal phenomenon. On most days, we go through a wide array of emotions that may influence our overall sense of well-being. In fact, there are tons of biological, psychological, and natural reasons that may trigger shifts in mood. Whether it’s a heated argument with some other person, a stressful event at work/college or at times there is no specific reason for the mood to fluctuate rapidly. It is pertinent for people to know that mood swings are normal. It is not possible to feel the same emotion, at the same concentration during the entire day.
HOW PEOPLE PERCIEVE MOOD SWINGS:
Every person and their thought process is very different. Like I mentioned above, that mood swings are normal, but some people do not understand this basic concept. I have myself come across few individuals who made me feel terrible or weird for having mood swings. Snarky comments like “Can you ever be happy” or “Oh god, again with these mood swings, grow up” really trigger the emotional factor even more. These particular set of people who consider mood swing as a problem need to understand that there is no human on this planet who does not experience mood swing at least once a day or once in two days, including them. Mocking other people for having emotional meltdowns or shifts is one of the worst things you can do to a person.
Sometimes people experience anxiety or crying along with basic mood swings which is again very natural. If I take my example, I have minor anxiety issues and I cry a lot because of my sensitive nature. At times, some people who are or were apparently close to me have said really impolite things like telling me “Because of your silly mood swings, our day gets spoiled” or “They are very sweet to my face but make fun of me and my sensitive nature behind my back”. Earlier I used to tolerate all this or just keep my mouth shut, but now I don’t because having such negative and boorish people makes life even more difficult.
My point here is if you can’t support or be there for someone who is going through an array of emotions then just maintain a healthy distance because adding on to the emotional burden is not a good thing. Everyone experiences mood swings at a different intensity. Let me make one thing very clear that mood swings are not a source of gaining sympathy. Some people might do it, but mostly that feeling is genuine, so avoid making the situation worse for them. During this phase, the mind is full of scenarios and situations which can hamper your regular thinking process. That’s why you generally need someone to just listen. Not try and fix anything or offer alternatives, but to just be there and listen.
REASONS FOR HAVING MOOD SWINGS:
While I was researching on the internet, the major factor stated for having mood swings in females was the menstrual cycle. Which is so funny because that is not the case every time a mood fluctuation happens. I am sure all the girls reading this must have heard this statement by people around them at least once in their life. And if a male is having a mood fluctuation, most of the times it is perceived as an alien situation because according to the society norms boys are not allowed to express or show their emotions, if they do so, they are deemed as weak or bizarre.
I want to break this entire concept by saying that mood swings are gender neutral. It can happen because of the following factors:
- Mood swings can happen due to some internal factor that includes any underlying situation which bothers you to the core and leads to this fluctuation.
- This can also happen because of some external factor which includes any living or non-living thing.
- *This is the most interesting point* Mood swings can happen without any reason as well. Yes, it does happen. It is normal. At times, you might experience this sudden shift in your emotions without having any solid reason. When someone asks you what is wrong, and you are not able to explain exactly why you are feeling this way, people tend to describe you as being rude or “Bhav khana”. But that is not the case, you need to understand there are situations where that person is himself trying to join the dots and understand his feelings.
HOW TO DEAL WITH MOOD SWINGS:
- Be aware of any shifts in mood:
The first step in handling mood swings is recognizing when these mood swings occur and what indications it is giving. Sadly, people are so caught up with their busy lives that they often ignore the emotional changes that influence their moods. And that is the reason why people end up feeling like mood swings hit them out of nowhere. Every time you feel that your mood swings have taken a turn for the worse, notice the feelings that you’re experiencing at that given moment. And most importantly, try to figure out why you’re experiencing that unpleasant feeling. Once you identify this, you may start taking action which will ultimately result in positive shifts in your life.
2. Identify what you’re feeling:
Taking a moment to check in with yourself about your mood can help you begin gaining back control. Follow this 5-question rule to identify the root behind your mood fluctuations, if any.
- What kind of emotion am I feeling right now?
- What happened to make me feel this way?
- Does the situation have a different explanation that might make sense?
- What do I want to do about these feelings?
- Is there a better way of coping with them?
3. Don’t be embarrassed to ask for social assistance:
Mood swings may be tough to manage, especially when you’re caught up in a roller coaster of emotions that generate confusion and self-doubt. It’s hard to distinguish between ‘good’ and ‘bad,’ ‘healthy’ and ‘unhealthy,’ or ‘normal’ and ‘abnormal’ when you’re the one experiencing these sudden emotional fluctuations. If you find yourself in a case of extreme mood swings, perhaps you should ask for an outside opinion. Talk to your friends or family members about your concerns. Ask them if they’ve noticed your mood changes over the past days, weeks, or months.
4. Express yourself:
Find a creative outlet to express yourself. You can start with either maintaining a journal which may include a daily journal along with a gratitude journal. Writing down your thoughts will help you to identify the key problem which our mind is not able to catch. Along with journaling, you can express your emotions with a close friend or a family member. This way you ll be able to think from someone else’s perspective as well which might help you to identify the situation in a better way. Stick to 1 or 2 people only because too many perspectives might hamper your own though process.
5. Consult a mental health professional if needed:
If you’re dealing with frequent mood swings that affect your daily life, perhaps it’s time to seek medical advice and consult a mental health professional. Considering that mood swings may sometimes indicate the presence of a serious emotional problem, getting reviewed by an accredited therapist is the ideal way to get a clear picture of what you’re going through.
