SHOULD MEN WEAR MAKEUP?

So, you must be thinking why I have chosen this particular topic?

Well, we are in the 21st century and as the number of male artists on social media are increasing who can be seen flaunting their makeup skills, along with that the people criticizing with their negative judgements regarding the same are also growing simultaneously.

I have few male friends who wear makeup and according to me I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Everybody has a right to be themselves and wearing makeup should not be a criterion for judging someone’s personality. Besides, trolls on the internet will always have an opinion to say whenever it comes to something which is different than what the society perceives as normal. I came across a website where there was an open poll with the question ‘Should Men Wear Makeup’? In this poll people could vote for either yes or no supported by an explanation for choosing the said answer. 81% people opted for yes and the rest 19% opted for no. I was very curious to look into the explanations or opinions of the people who were against this. The first comment that caught my attention was “It destroys our manhood and physical appearance. It also confuses younger generations”.

I was taken aback after reading this because this is the 21st Century and over the years so much has changed, people should at least try to acknowledge and become more accepting. When we say that girls wear makeup just because they feel more confident then why can’t we accept the fact that males can wear makeup because they want to feel confident and comfortable in their own skin. The statement about ‘confusing younger generation’ was a bit absurd because instead of hiding all this stuff from younger kids, they should be well educated for the same so that when they grow up, things don’t become confusing for them. I have myself seen a mixture of comments on social media under the posts of men who put up makeup tutorials. There are people who genuinely understand these concepts and praise them whereas there are always some people that will go out of their way to put someone down because they do not agree or think it’s weird, and put out a very bad and a hateful comment.

On twitter I saw a thread with a question which read as – ‘Have you ever been a witness to comments being made about males wearing makeup? – positive and negative.’ Majority of the response to this was I’ve heard people say, ‘it makes them look gay’. I got really upset after reading this because it’s an individual choice to wear makeup and being gay or not does not coincide with this factor!  ‘STRAIGHT MEN WEAR MAKEUP, GET OVER IT’. No one should feel pressured to present themselves in a certain manner. It is vital to make somebody who considers that it is ‘weird’ or ‘gay’ to try and comprehend the notion of male’s feeling better about themselves irrespective of their dressing choices, makeup choices, way of talking or other preferences.

Makeup is not just for women and even though that may sound apparent to most individuals it bears recurring in a world where even girls are still strongly criticized for either the amount of makeup they do or do not choose to wear. Men have been applying makeup for centuries, even in a beauty industry that is dominated by women. However, this is the 21st Century, everyone is so experimental nowadays. There are numerous opportunities out there, so why not go and grab them? Sometimes you need to break the walls and barriers to make people realize just how amazing you can be on your own terms and by not following the crowd.

Social media is the greatest phenomenon to hit the 21st Century. Some people see it as a boon whereas some see it as a big disadvantage to the society. Both contentions are reasonable as both can be justified with valid reasons. But as far as makeup is concerned, it has only brought positive challenges. I agree you get trolled from people who hide behind their screen saying whatever they can, but always remember they do it because they are themselves insecure. People generally send hateful comments online to make themselves feel good, but they do not understand the sensitivity of how the other person will feel after reading all these comments.

As the world of social media influencers is rapidly increasing, major brands are noticing men’s talents and skills when it comes to applying makeup. They are also being hired as makeup artists or being sponsored by various companies to advertise and promote their products pertaining to their fan base on social media. However, I do feel that there is still lack of exposure given to men in this area, equality is enormous in today’s time but there seems to be very less when it comes to makeup. If more efforts and opportunities were given to men through promoting products, television advertisements, big campaigns etc. for makeup brands, then maybe people wouldn’t find it ‘weird’ and men would feel more confident to actually wear it. Everyone has the freedom to wear what they want. What is so different to a man applying hair dye when they are starting to go grey, than a man using foundation to cover up his skin, a bit of glittery eye shadow and mascara to feel more confident or happy?

Both males and females don’t wear makeup to impress other people, but to enhance their confidence, be creative and have fun. The power of makeup is incredible when it comes to transforming the way we look each day. And if that cannot sum up this whole question of why it is seen as wrong, then I don’t know what can.

BEAUTY BEGINS THE MOMENT YOU DECIDE TO BE YOUSELF, IRRESPECTIVE OF GENDER!

Love, KG

Yes they should no they should not why should we ask this question it is anybodys personal choice but why people wear makeup its either to enhance their looks or to hide what they think are flaws in their skin or features but anything which you wear or do is not common catches the eye of people but once it becomes common or prevalent it is ignored one example is that in olden times men used to wrar a lot of jewellery and it was normal but today if bappi lahiri wears it looks odd and different but kalyani has raked up an entirely new issue and needs accolades as such are people who are instrumental in bringing revolutions god bless you think more write more the world needs it love

It’s a new topic to speak upon such a bold thing ! We’ve created a taboo by being the dominant society on people who wear make up – be it a man or a woman. It’s really amazing that you’ve decided to speak onto this and normalise MEN WEARING MAKEUP , just to have a boost of self confidence.
Sending you all the love kg ❤️❤️

Woww!! I agree with your words. You chose such an important topic. I think we must do whatever we feel like doing and not think about what other people will say about it as they will anyway judge us. There is no point is seeking acceptance from this society. It is your happiness that matters the most. More power to such men. I just hope more opportunities will be given to them in future.
